Roger, even recognizing that few players have an A bass, it is
inconsistent to describe clarinet instrumentation as calling for
an A and B-flat soprano clarinet, and then failing to specify
that the bass clarinet requirement is also for A and B-flat
instruments.

The Mahler 4 is a case in point. It is not as you suggest for A,
B-flat, C, and bass, but rather for A, B-flat, and C soprano
clarinets, and A and B-flat bass clarinet.

It is a small point, to be sure, but that is exactly how the A
bass and its importance and purpose is overlooked by the world of
clarinet players. Surely just because a particular instrument has
a small population who actually own it does not mean that naming
its pitch is not necessary.

To amplify re Mahler 4: 1. needs A, B flat & C; 2. needs A, B
flat & E flat;
3. needs A, B flat, C and bass.
