While David is quite correct about the 3rd clarinet, it is more a
case of bass clarinet doubling on 3rd rather than the other way
round. In addition, there is some A bass clarinet work too. As
I remember, the last time I played Mahler 5, I had a clarinet
store in front of me. B-flat, A, C, E-flat, Bass in B-flat and
Bass in A. I did not own a D clarinet and felt very guilty about
having to transpose. I got a triple fee for the work, but
thought that the bass in A should have counted for another
instrument. I lost. The union did not like my logic.

Mahler 4 has three clarinet parts. 2nd clarinet doubles Eb. 3rd
doubles
bass clarinet.
