This is good advice. I'm new to clarinet, but not music. When I
auditioned for university (my instrument was voice) I picked pieces
that were contrasting moods & by my two favourite composers. They
were not showy - in fact they were a grade level or two below what the
department said was expected, but they were pieces that I loved & knew
I could sing well. Even though I had much less in the way of formal
training & technical skills than most of the other students, picking
relatively simple songs and doing a good job on them was enough to get
me into my first choice school.
