Chris,
Forget about impressive pieces! Play anything you can play WELL. As a
teacher, (and I feel confident in speaking for other teachers) I am
impressed when a new student shows that he is well-prepared on what he
plays and that he has good musicality and control. Fancy music doesn't
impress anyone unless it is done well. Even a relatively easy piece can
show breath control, tone quality, counting, etc.
