Hi Anne,

I agree with you completely that from a musical standpoint the band
director's tempos seem to do an injustice to the etudes. In helping your
students prepare, I'd certainly point out the beauty of the pieces at the
slower tempo--the lovely chord progressions in 6 (just begging for a bit of
rubato), and the charming ornamented melody in 21. However, as audition
pieces, I would have them prepare them at the tempos dictated.

(I note David Hite, for whom I have a lot of respect, has 6 at 96, and 21 at
76, still faster than my aesthetic would like it.)
