David, I tried it when Vann first raised the question.

I was tempted to post something with which other people have disagreed
in the past, but I kept it to myself. Now, however, in the spirit of
questioning authority... and also because I'm tired of doing chores
right now :-( and I welcome a diversion:

I doubt that I could ever learn to tongue "reed-up" smoothly enough to
be 'musical', but I also think that tonguing 'reed-up' does not serve
the same purpose as 'reed-down'.

This is because it seems necessary (in my own mouth and with my own
tongue, at least) to block the air flow if my tongue starts at the
bottom of my mouth and climbs up across the open space between reed and
mouthpiece --- whereas stopping the air flow is not absolutely necessary
when tonguing 'reed-down'. 'Reed-down' allows you to touch the reed
just enough with your tongue to stop the reed's vibration without
necessarily shutting off the air flow (if it happens that you want this
effect). Hence my opinion is that the two forms of tonguing would be
fundamentally different.

And therefore I think that Vann's original question is an interesting
one.
