We all have finite resources, for sure, so we usually have to pick and
choose carefully the things we question in detail. But that's part of
the joy of it---the best and most important thing in life is to find the
right *questions*... :-)

Of course, one of the interesting things about things like symbols is
that they are there for historical reasons and their prevalence tends to
be down to a great extent to the influence of "authorities". But of
course as situations change so do our conventions---just think of the
difference between what a classical musician looks at on the music-stand
and what an electronic composer looks at on the computer screen of his
sound-editing software. Sooner or later questioning the authority of
the symbol can be useful....
