No. Questioning authority simply means that you don't take what is said
as true because the authority said it. You go over their argument and
the evidence they have presented and so on.

It doesn't mean saying, "The Big Authority said it so it can't be
true....!" although in some cases (such as politics) this may well
frequently be the case... ;-)

In the case of Stubbins I suspect that his cited references are limited
(or non-existent) and in any case, being dated in 1965, his evidence is
simply out-of-date when it comes to research into performance practise.
Or maybe he simply didn't do enough research into the subject and
accepted simplistic interpretations of early clarinet method without
stopping to question why Mozart would have written "Allegro" if the
clarinettist couldn't play that fast....

Alternatively he may have been an arrogant git who was simply looking
for a nice opportunity to present his knowledge of correct performance
practise as being superior to that of most (or all) other players.... :-P
