One place you might want to pay attention to is the end grain at the end of
the joints. Constant exposure to moisture in these areas often deteriorates
the wood to a certain extent, especially when an instrument is played for
long periods and not cleaned regularly. I also teach my clients and students
to pay particular attention to the tenons, both male and female, when drying
their clarinets, even if they play plastic ones, as it develops good habits
for when they upgrade, and of course lessens the gunk I have to clean out
next time it is due for a service.

The application of a little cork grease at these places will help to stop
penetration of water.

As to oiling, there are as many opinions as there are 'experts.' Do what you
feel is right.

The deterioration at the tenons would be a major cause of a Clarinet not
playing well over time.
I give my students "makeup pads" or also called "cotton rounds" to use to
clean and dry the tenons.
Previously used paper shop towels cut in strips but Morrie Backun suggested
the rounds.
They work really well.
