Rob,
I agree that your solution can work, and is cheap. However, for the
way I, and many others, use the internet in conjunction with and
interspersed with my use of other software it is not workable. For me,
anyway, it is not practical to reboot and reconnect cables each time I
need to check my e-mail, access a web site, etc. I don't have time for
dozens of reboots daily.
I also agree that, unless a person is ready for a new computer anyway,
buying a MAC is probably not going to happen. But, when you are ready
for a new machine, consider a switch. You'll be working in a more
secure (unix based) environment (although you still need a firewall!).
Regarding price, I believe the expense of MAC ownership is generally
overstated. They compare pretty well with SIMILAR QUALITY PCs. In any
case, I have always been willing to pay a small premium for a better
product, whether a computer, a clarinet, etc. I have relatives who go
through two or more PCs for each one of my MACs. Overall I think I've
done OK with the investment.
