I don't know what's the big deal about this comment, the business about
running screaming is very descriptive. I am a male oboist and find the
comment to be insightful. It does not matter if you like this or not, that's
just how it is. Oboists, for reasons I have yet to understand, tend to be
more catty and backstabbing than clarinet players, regardless of sex; I've
been screwed over many times over the years by oboist colleagues, most of
whom, as it happens, were men. If Ellis has worked primarily with lady
oboists, his comment makes perfect sense.

One sad sequelum of the modern American drive to be inoffensive is a
reluctance to face truths that may offend. This is not a character
strength.
