Indeed, a dilemma I have also been faced with. It might be worth
checking out Crossover Office [
http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxoffice/ ] which is itself at least
partly based on the Wine project [ http://www.winehq.com/ ] to create an
open source version of the Windows API (i.e. to allow Windows programs
to be installed and run directly in Linux). Both I think indicate that
Finale is functional with them.

I don't think Lilypond even begins to come close to Finale or Sibelius
in terms of functionality, ease of use or notational possibilities.
Maybe if you want to notate Mozart and you aren't too fussy about
customizing the look of your score, it might be worth using. If you are
seriously wanting to compose and notate music, really only Finale or
Sibelius will do IMO.

Currently I have too much going on to want to go through the hassle of
switching to Linux; I'm waiting for the next computer and then I'll go
for it. ;-) But if you want to try, the above programs might sort out
your problem.

Incidentally, installing Linux is not a panacea for viruses and
hacking. Make sure your machine is secure; you should still have
firewall and antivirus software. Just because at the present time Linux
is not widely targeted does not mean it will not be in future.
