Sorry for the double posting. I have been changing passwords this
whole time and I'm logging off for a day or so. The problem was NOT
antivirus or even firewall - they were both current and running. The
problem was that I left the "back door" open by not setting up an
administrator password in Windows XP. (The Dell rep who talked me
through the reinstall didn't mention that little detail when we did
it.)

The hackers are pinging ISP addresses and when they find the door
open, they come in and set up an administrator account that works in
the background and accesses everything in your computer. Virus scans
won't see it, and they bypass your firewall if there's no password.
