No long concert, but one longer than usual piece. Back in about 1970, the
Notre Dame basketball team was convincingly breaking UCLA's 40-some game
unbeaten streak. I was playing clarinet in the band, and we decided with
about two-minutes remaining that we would start playing the "Victory March"
and keep playing until the end of the game. Of course, you know how the
last couple of minutes of a basketball game go, especially one that is
being televised. So, after what seemed like a hundred free throws, seven
time-outs, whatever other delays they could think of, and no fewer than 15
times through the trio (no doubt many more, but who was counting?), the
final buzzer mercifully sounded and we were able to drag our sagging lips
back to the band room!
