Hey, folks,

Last Friday evening my wife and I joined some of her friends at Selen's
in Cudahy (south Milwaukee), for dinner and "some jazz clarinet guy,"
whose wife has worked with mine for some time.

The "jazz clarinet guy" turned out to be Chuck Hedges, fronting a very
fine Benny Goodman-style quintet (clarinet, vibes, guitar, bass, drums).
After sitting through two or three sets of listening to him swing, I
remembered again why I put the horn away for so many years...I wanted to
break my fingers. The highlight for me was his tribute to Goodman, a
"Sing, Sing, Sing" break thrown in the middle of another song.

I had a chance to speak to him during one of the breaks. He's playing a
Leblanc LS, with a crystal mouthpiece ("made from a coke bottle") and
Legere reeds ("they changed my life," he told me).

If you're in the area, he plays Selen's every Friday night, and I think
he may play Monday nights at a place in Chicago.

Oh, and the food was great, too.
