Heh! I posted in a spirit of humor, of course, but....

Swallowing involves closing either the air path or the stomach path by
folding the epiglottis (which is cartilege), but I think that swallowing
also involves relaxing & contracting 'throat muscles' in the neck.
(Diane Karius could probably tell us more?). Thus it's not totally
unreasonable that an accomplished hot dog swallower (or sword swallower)
could keep the air path more fully open.
