I have found over the years that there is often a mismatch between the
shape of the tip of commercial reeds and the tip of my mouthpiece(s),
but usually not enough on the clarinet to appear to be significant -
usually just the corners being rounded differently or overlapping more
or less depending on the combination. However, I've been playing the
alto sax recently for a one-time gig after a 30-year or so hiatus after
college, and the differences are really noticeable there - very
significance in the curvature of the reed vs the mouthpiece tip. Is
there a recommended procedure, i.e. do's and don'ts, for making them
match better? I've been using very fine (220) sandpaper to shape the
reed (of course I'm not going to try to shape the mouthpiece!).

By the way, unless I read it wrong, the fingerings for the clarinet
(any clarinet) and the sax (any sax) are most definitely not the same,
and the changes are right at the throat tones and on up as well as
below the bottom G/D.
