I recall reading ( but not the source). that Lester Young claimed he
heard himself better when holding the horn
up.

It does make sense.... I doubt if the bands had any monitor systems in
place, and raising the tenor as Young did would cause the keys, esp the
right hand , to be open facing up towards the player. I've
experimented with this a few times (no.. I still don't sound or solo
like Lester.. not even close), but I believe you can hear yourself
easier. Anyone else ever hear of this reasoning?
