Uh, David, no need to imagine. The Complete Schubert Edition shows
exactly which octave Schubert intended. The solo part is very carefully
written to fit with the tessitura of the piano part. Many clarinet
transcriptions (including Bellison's) take long passages up an octave
to make it sound more "clarinetty" (technical term!!).

Also, I looked at the URL that Mark posted re: Arpeggione. Very
informative, including a long discussion of the original articulations
vs. articulations in various editions (for bass, but the idea is the
same), and how those changes of articulation change the character of
the music, and not for the better.
