Subj: [kl] Davie Breeden's funeral
Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 00:11:35 -0400

I am now returned from David Breeden's quiet and somber funeral
held at the Gloria Dei Evangelical Lutheran Church and School in
Belmont, CA, where the the Reverend Johnold J. Strey, Paster of
the church led an enormous group of people in a farewell to
David.

There were so many people at the church that the overflow crowd
(which included my wife and me) went downstairs to a meeting room
and saw the events through a television camera. I think that the
entire SF Symphony orchestra was there because at the front door
of the church, before I directed to go downstairs, it was clear
that they had reserved special seats for the symphony players.
Because I was not in the larger chapel, I am unable to report who
was there to say goodbye to David and pay respects to him lying
in an open coffin at the front of the church.

Except for extended laudatory comments from Paster Strey, there
were no references to David except in the two handouts, one
acting as a small hymnal, and the other containing the details of
the service.

At the conclusion everyone was asked to come to the front of the
church to pay their final respects to David but I could not bring
myself to do that, preferring to remember him as was when I last
saw him.

I am sorry that I can give no further details but being
downstairs prevented me from being a first hand observer of the
friends and colleagues of David who were there. Paster Strey's
comments were touching and very personal, speaking of David's
love of the bible and the music of J.S. Bach, many of whose hymns
were heard and sung at the service.
