Well let's discuss it then. The addition of four low semitones
to a soprano clarinet does not make it a low clarinet. That is a
serious technical error on the part of Buffet (if it is as you
say). The basset clarinet is a think wanted by a person who
needs a soprano clarinet in A with basset notes, so where,
logically, would such a person look for that instrument?

It is as if the catalog for soprano clarinets were to suddenly
have inserted into it an alto clarinet.

By the way, the same argument can be made for a basset horn. It
is not an alto clarinet pitched in F, but can be strongly argued
to be a soprano clarinet pitched in F that happens to have some
low note in it.

It certainly would interesting to see if the basset clarinet (and
basset horn) ARE in a different catalog, namely one for low
clarinets (which is not the same as a soprano clarinet that has
notes lower than the traditional soprano clarinet). It's
illogical and creates a definition of an instrument type at
variance with what it is.

Like I said before---wrong catalogue. The basset clarinet is in
the
"low clarinets" catalogue along with basset horn, alto, bass and
contra-alto instruments.

Whether it should be there or in the soprano clarinet catalogue
is of
course a point one could discuss. ;-)
