I received this - a bit old - but I thought it important to subscribe and
respond.

"I first tried [a Buffet Greenline] a couple of months ago. A customer
brought her clarinet in for adjustment, and I was asked to play test it
before she picked it up. I was floored by how well it responded, and it
wasn't until after I put it back in the case that I noticed the Greenline
label. I loved the sound.

As far as breakage goes - at the store we've never had a Greenline clarinet
or oboe with a broken joint. We have had to replace several clarinet upper
joints this year due to bad cracks.

Just my experience, YMMV.

I really think the Greenline is a wonderful addition to the line. Frankly,
after you get used to one, it will play just like the R-13 counterpart. Of
course, it is a little heavier, and the resistance factor when you blow
through it is slightly different, but it is a wonderful instrument - every
bit as "good" as the other pro horns in the line. Personal preference is
always important. I know that Bob Spring really likes his set of Greenline
instruments - as do many other great teacher/players out there.

I did want to mention though that they do have a greater risk of breaking
than their wood counterparts. I have had two students with broken tenon
joints - in almost exactly the same location. One was the result of a fall
off of a students lap to the floor (I sure hate that sound!), and the other
was the result of a case not being closed and the student stood up. Both
were less than two feet from the floor. I've never seen that happen with a
wood clarinet (although I have with plastic) - but to have that happen with
two Greenlines - the only two in the school - within a two year spread -
leads me to believe that they do have a higher risk. Just something to be
aware of.

Best wishes,
Roger Garrett
