I'm sure ease of manufacture has much to do with it, despite the extra cork
joint. I also think that the more similar the plastic clarinet is to a
wood one, the less difference is perceived by the customer, helping
sales. I presume that is how plastic doomed metal clarinets in the first
place -- They LOOKED more like the wood ones!
