Actually, Bellison's arrangement sounds wonderful on the clarinet, and my
problem is not with the transposition of the piano part--it's that so little
of it is left.

That's true enough. But if the published Barenreiter part were for A
clarinet, at least we would be starting with a workable key signature, and a
reasonably sonorous one, all more in keeping with 19th century clarinet
music.

There's still at least one recording of this sonata on arpeggione available
on CD.
