I too have made many a disparaging remark about "bad" metal clarinets. I always covered myself by mentioning the "good" ones my professor, Clem Hutchinson, had talked about.

Recently a very good friend brought one into the shop and asked me to clean up his try at re-building one. Since it was for a "very good friend" I cleaned it up a great deal and did a lot of special acoustical work to it.

Surprise----it is a good instrument. I was shocked.

Do I detect a rich vein of cynicism arguing in a baroque fashion
against the metal clarinet as a perfectly satisfactory form of
the instrument?

Especially in the hands of a craftsman who can shine it up real
pretty and put on a beautiful lampshade. Jay Webler
