him.=20He=20certainly=20performs=20the=20work=20with=20basset=20notes=20(s=
ee=20his=20recording=20on=20the=20Amon=20Ra=20label).=20

He=20also=20helped=20me=20prepare=20a=20performance=20of=20the=20work=20on=
=20on=20period=20basset=20-=20his=20justification=20for=20altering=20the=20=
part=20was=20based=20largely=20on=20aesthetic=20and=20musical=20reasons=20=
and=20his=20own=20understanding=20of=20Mozart's=20style=20(eg=20areas=20su=
ch=20as=20the=20descending=20triplet=20upbeat=20in=20the=20second=20trio=20=
are=20in=20his=20view=20crying=20out=20for=20alteration)=20but=20also=20on=
=20a=20facimile=20fragment=20of=20an=20early=20edition=20of=20the=20work=20=
that=20he=20posesses=20that=20shows=20the=20final=20note=20of=20the=20firs=
t=20movement=20notated=20in=20'horn=20notation'=20(i.e.=20in=20the=20bass=20=
clef,=208ve=20below=20sounding=20pitch)=20which=20was=20the=20standard=20n=
otaton=20for=20basset=20notes.=20He=20believed=20this=20to=20be=20an=20ove=
rlooked=20throwback=20to=20the=20original=20version=20by=20a=20careless=20=
copyist.

I=20certainly=20found=20the=20work=20more=20satisfying=20on=20a=20basset=20=
instrument,=20and=20I=20don't=20think=20that=20the=20lack=20of=20'proof'=20=
to=20suggest=20that=20it=20originally=20contained=20basset=20notes=20shoul=
d=20stop=20us=20from=20experimenting=20-=20after=20all,=20the=20absence=20=
of=20evidence=20for=20a=20hypothesis=20does=20not=20amount=20to=20proof=20=
that=20the=20contrary=20is=20true!
