When David and I spoke a few months ago, he told me that he was
not well, but somehow, perhaps from something he said, I thought
it was shingles. Maybe someone else told me that and I simply
accepted it. Anyway, he did not sound like himself and I simply
assumed that shingles can put one in a blinding terrible mood.
But I never thought that he had cancer.
David was not of an age when one thinks about that kind of a
serious illness. I suspect that he was less than 60, thought I
don't know. He was a very pleasant guy to work with, a fine
orchestral clarinetist, and a real rock in the section. When I
first moved to this area, David was assistant principal and
E-flat, a terrific E-flat player by the way. Phil Fath was and
had been principal for some time. When the orchestra got divided
up to create a full time opera orchestra, Phil went into the pit
and David took over.
I understand that David's father was a clarinet teacher in Texas.
It's terribly sad to hear this dreadful news about such a
pleasant individual.

I haven't seen this posted yet: David Breeden, principal
clarinetist
of the San Francisco Symphony, died yesterday of multiple
myeloma.
