You're right, there appears to be nothing that suggests where the low notes
might be used.

But *of course* it leaves that to any such player.
The checks and balances consist just of the fact that very many of those
usages wouldn't make sense, either arguably to a past audience, or actually
to a present audience.
(And why wouldn't ma of either period understand that as well as anyone?-)

Well, it's been just as much interest to *me*, even though the evidence for
the use of a basset clarinet in it is circumstantial.
Or perhaps my interest is not to be measured by the number of *bloody
reconstructions* by *bloody editors* that are available to me;-)
