Subj: [kl] I bought a recoding

AFter heaing Combs and Daniels play the Il Covegno live on Sat.
night, I bought the recording of it in an album called "Crossing
the Line." It was worth the money. And I chatted with Larry the
next morning when I was eating breakfast at the hotel. He was at
the same La Quinta.

I told him how splendid I thought everything went but that I was
hoping for far more improvisations than he did, because he is so
gifted at doing improvisations in Mozart. It is an art that his
mastered well. But he said, "I work under two principles: less is
more, and don't gild the lilly." So we had some words about that
and I hit him in the head with my chair!! Didn't get near his
mouth to injure the embouchure but there was some brain damage.
He'll survive. I got the worst of it because he stuck his basset
clarinet up my nose. It's hard to breathe now. But I had the
horn, jumped in my car, and got out of town.

The recording "Crossing the Line" can be found on
www.summitrecords.com and is record number DCD 1022.

Later when I calm down, I want to make some comments about the
issue of the basset clarinet in K. 581. It is not nearly as
settled as in K. 622 (which is also far from settled). But not
now, I want to think about it.
