Apropos of instruments built for _very_ specialized uses, I notice (in
New Harvard Dictionary of Music):
Sax tuba: A valved brass instrument in circular form. Adolphe Sax
made 15 of them in various sizes for Halevy's opera "Le juif errant" in
1852.
I wonder how low these instruments went?
