Plastic clarinets are perfectly "real" and a relatively inexpensive
alternative to a wood one. A beginner would never notice the difference,
if any, in tone quality. In fact, they often seal BETTER than wood
clarinets. As long as one buys a legitimate brand and not a Chinese lamp
base they are fine. I have played big band gigs with a plastic Bundy 1400
-- I liked it so much I bought a WOOD Bundy to use instead, ENTIRELY for
looks. I still use the plastic one for outdoor jazz gigs.

Today in the shop the opportunity developed to do a blind trial, using a
plastic clarinet (Vito), a wood clarinet (Noblet), and a metal clarinet
(Cundy-Bettoney). All were in good working order already or had just been
repaired. I played the first few bars of the Mozart concerto on each one,
in that order, and we had several people (musicians, technicians, and the
store owner) try to determine which was which. No one correctly identified
the METAL one, much less wood vs. plastic!

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
