Ooops!

It's not age that matters. It's true that many children play outdoors
and many children are rougher on their instruments, and therefore
plastic may be preferable. But some adults play outdoors and are rough
on their instruments too!

And where budgets are concerned, some adults quit after a few months or
years, just as children do.

Beginners --- young or old --- aren't going to be able to appreciate the
nuances of plastic vs wood for a year (or two or three or four).

And last but not least, some plastic clarinets are far superior to some
wood clarinets. Even the major manufacturers turn out clunkers from
time to time. Thus a particular plastic clarinet may be a far better
beginner's horn than a particular wood clarinet.
