Plastic clarinets are perfectly "real" and a relatively inexpensive
alternative to a wood one. A beginner would never notice the difference,
if any, in tone quality. In fact, they often seal BETTER than wood
clarinets. As long as one buys a legitimate brand and not a Chinese lamp
base they are fine. I have played big band gigs with a plastic Bundy 1400
-- I liked it so much I bought a WOOD Bundy to use instead, ENTIRELY for
looks. I still use the plastic one for outdoor jazz gigs.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
