I bought a new Martin "Indiana" tenor in 1955, and owned it until the
early 1960's. I made enough money playing it to pay my way through
college.

It wasn't quite as substantial as the top line Selmers of that period,
but it was quite easy to play, and the intonation was manageable. The
thing that I liked most about it was that it felt very comfortable in
the hands, and that in the time before it was well known that the field
of "ergonomics" existed.

I think I paid $189 for that instrument, which was equivalent to a
fortune to me at the time, but it may be one of the best bargains I have
ever had. I wouldn't buy such an instrument today, but it served me
very well at the time.
