Hi,
I play a standard Bb clarinet almost exclusively for chamber
music (in a theatre company) and church. I also play in a
marching band, and have been playing clarinet for about 8
years. I would love a sop. clarinet which extended down to
basset range, as frequently I am improvising around a tune,
or backing another voice (sax, violin, etc), and so to be able
to reach down to those lovely notes would be fantastic. But...
the added expense of a Basset extension or clarinet is too high.
I, and others, cannot even afford an A clarinet, let alone a
basset as well.
By the way, does a basset clarinet allow one to play those
troublesome Bb/A/Ab/G/Gb/F notes as clarion? I have often thought
that some crossover (either with this, or with chalmeau extended
up to C# or so) might help with occasional break passages by
mad composers...
