I suppose that a researcher must deal with whatever he or she finds, but
I can't resist asking:

On various surfaces, there are what appear to be measure numbers and
page numbers in a hand other than Mozart's, and also the names of notes
such as "Ab".

I would've thought that adding anything to a manuscript would be an
unforgivable sin. But if stuff has been added to what Mozart himself
wrote (before or after the offender realized who wrote manuscript?),
then how can we accept anything on the fragment (such as the double dots
that Dan found) as absolute gospel?
