Andy - I agree with everything you say. Here's one more perspective. I took
almost every bass clarinet audition in the 70's. (Chicago twice, Cincinnati,
Milwaukee, Chicago Lyric, etc..) Almost every one required you to play the
solo from the Khachaturian Piano Concerto.

So, if you didn't have a low C, you couldn't audition!
