Barrel dimensions certainly affect both pitch and tone.

If I were in your shoes, I would first use my tuner to test whether both
barrels truly play at the same pitches for as much of the scale as I
could handle confidently. Your ear may be confusing 'tone' with
'pitch'. So focus your attention on pitch first.
