Peter,
Trust your instincts, that is the best way to work with beginners.
Play with them - they need an example! find very simple arrangements for duets, trios etc. , and make them listen to each other.
And most important: think about them as young musicians and not clarinet players, and make sure that they
play the correct rhythm and nots .
