Doing a recital isn't research. It's hard work,
no doubt, but research it is not. A degree is an
academic qualification, not a practical one. Or
at least that is what it should be.

Reply:
1st- On the note of the recital, there is more
than practice time that goes into an effective
collegiate recital. There is research into the
works to be performed on the recital. There is
score analysis (not just analysis of the solo
part) to fully understand the works to be
performed. There is research into the time
period of each work and that period's performance
practices (often times much of this understanding
comes from classes.) There is research into the
background of the composers of the works, their
influences, etc. Many schools also require a
written and/or oral defense of all the research
done for the recital. There are probably some
items I am missing from this list as well,
whereas some of our Professors on the list could
probably be more informative.

As for the academic qualification, if you take a
look at a graduate bulletin, you will see there
is a substantial amount of academic based
coursework, and the recital/defense only
constitutes a very small portion of this
coursework. I invite you to look at some of
thebulletinss available for a degree in music.
Talk with some of those people who do in fact
have these degrees, and browse through some of
the textbooks used in many Masters and Doctoral
courses. You will see there is a large amount of
academic preparation involved in a music degree,
not just recital preparation (which as I said
earlier also has a huge academic component).
