There is one other distinction between a PhD and a DMA or DMus degree.
The DMA or Dmus is considered a "professional" degree and the PhD an
"academic" degree (well...perhaps research =3Dacademic in the context of
Jim's e-mail).

Subject: [kl] DMA vs. PhD
The DMA degree (Doctor of Musical Arts), to a PhD in Music, is like an
MD=20
degree to an PhD in Medicine. One is a research degree, the other is a=20
practicing (pun intended) degree. When people ask me what they can do
for a=20
particular ailment, I tell them to practice two C# scales, very fast, in
three octaves and call me in the morning. As Matthew Lloyd stated, my
DMA=20
required three recitals, comps, orals, a rather extensive research
paper,=20
plus three other craft fields... in my case conducting, Music Ed and
Music=20
History. A whole lot of work. And, yes, it's possible to earn a DMA in
Percussion from many universities. I don't envy percussionists. They
must=20
learn so many more instruments that we mere clarinet players, and they
have=20
to haul all that crap around!
