Subj: [kl] DMA vs. PhD
Date: Mon, 06 Jun 2005 17:48:52 -0400

The DMA degree (Doctor of Musical Arts), to a PhD in Music, is like an MD
degree to an PhD in Medicine. One is a research degree, the other is a
practicing (pun intended) degree. When people ask me what they can do for a
particular ailment, I tell them to practice two C# scales, very fast, in
three octaves and call me in the morning. As Matthew Lloyd stated, my DMA
required three recitals, comps, orals, a rather extensive research paper,
plus three other craft fields... in my case conducting, Music Ed and Music
History. A whole lot of work. And, yes, it's possible to earn a DMA in
Percussion from many universities. I don't envy percussionists. They must
learn so many more instruments that we mere clarinet players, and they have
to haul all that crap around!
