Dear listers,

I've now received four responses to my crack posting.

The first response was off-list, from a knowledgeable person who =
bypassed
the question of my future relationship with the sick clarinet in order =
to
focus on repair considerations. I had forgotten to specify that the new
crack is beyond the area stabilized by the first repair's pins, so I =
learned
that it is also possible to have subsequent surface cracks *within* the
stabilized area. This person pointed out that replacing the tone hole =
with
an insert is a common procedure. This person's response was valuable =
both
for its information and its attitude, because the instrument *will* be
repaired regardless of what else I decide.

Tom Flavel asked whether the previous pinning could have caused tension =
that
resulted in the new crack. I'd say it's possible, though unlikely. The
repair holes were drilled completely through the wood (i.e., the holes =
were
not "blind"), and inserting the threaded pins should not create tension =
in
the wood.

Lelia Loban and David Blumberg responded in ways that I see as related.
Lelia said "past tends to be prologue," and David cited a repairman's =
claim
that "cracks come in pairs." Both quotes imply that this piece of wood =
is
showing its true nature: When inhibited from expressing itself by the =
first
repair's pins, it simply expresses itself in the next available place. =
This
seems a sensible way to look at the phenomenon in this instance, but I
wonder how accurate it is generally. For one thing, this is the first =
time
in my (admittedly limited) experience that I've encountered serial =
cracking.
Furthermore, one purpose of my initial posting was to elicit responses =
from
people who have experienced the same phenomenon. I have received no =
"Me,
too!" responses from anyone yet.
