Be a Doctor in an instrument means, in my oppinion, that you did TWO courses
in one: you must have to play several recitals with high level repertoire,
attend several theoretical disciplines for more then three years and
present, at the end, a high level research paper.
As you see it is compatible, but I agree that is a very dificult course
since you have to manage both together.. As I said, it is a two courses in
one.
An to be precise, the title is DMA, or Doctor in MUSICAL Arts. After that
title, you may add a specialization in any instrument, since play an
instrument, in my oppinion, is more then a pratical skil, is to develop
musical meanings through any instrument.
