I'm assuming you're leaving aside Tony's pet hate about "horn" meaning
more or less any wind instrument.

Early basset horns were curved - like horns. I think (and no doubt I'll
be corrected if I'm wrong) that this is one possible explanation.

The Cor Anglais is much the same......
