Donna,

I know several people around Baltimore who
use the term beefer. They tend to be reed
doublers for show pits.

"Yeah, I'm playing picc, beefer, and alto
for Reed 2 tonight"

Clarinets are eefer, beefer, and bass.
For alto clarinet you have to say alto clarinet
since an unmodified alto is an alto sax.

bass means bass clarinet, and you have to
say bass sax if you are playing Reed 4 for
West Side Story
(picc, flute, beefer, bass, soprano, and bass sax)

Note: I've never heard anyone attempt afer or aafer,
since A clarinets are unheard of in shows (except
some Sondheim oddities).
