Indeed so, but a modern instrument - even a C clarinet - is still quite
different from the instrument of Mozart's day; type of wood, much less
keywork requiring "cross-fingerings" versus pads, different mouthpiece
shapes and reed-fixing methods, and so on. The arguments for using a C
clarinet are still strong - the sound IS different from a Bb, even more
from an A - but not so clearcut that you can say "wrong" or "right".
That is why the original-instrument movement gained so much favour;
most woodwind are quite different, strings too and (many agree) the use
of modern string vibrato is totally "wrong".

The argument can go on endlessly, but one may as well do what is
possible - in my case I can't afford a C clarinet so that option is not
available to me.
