In an NPR interview just a few years ago, Artie Shaw talked about his
dislike of recording, saying something to the effect that "it was like
having your shoes stuck in concrete." He was talking, I think, about
the fear factor of knowing that your recording was going to be around
a long, long time. And if that fear got to Artie Shaw, well it's no
wonder that it's affected others, especially in classical where we've
just come to expect and sort of worship this ideal of perfection over
expression...
