I use a C clarinet these days as much a possible, when called for in
orchestra work. The instrument makes much of opera work a lot easier. I
also like to think that the composer really had the C clarinet in mind when
he wrote the part, at least from Berlioz on. Works like the Mahler Symphony
No. 1 cry out for a C, with the quasi-Klezmer solos for C clarinet. I'm
doing "Italian in Algiers" overture this weekend and find that the blend
with the matching oboe solo is better on the C. This is, of course, all
IMHO.

The real problem is finding a decent C, without taking out a second mortgage
or selling your first-born. I use a Noblet. Its reasonably in tune, sounds
good, and is affordable. Sure a Buffet or an Opus would be better, but for
the amount of C work I do, it does the job. I understand that Tom Ridenour
is marketing a composite Chinese made C clarinet that pretty good. Luis
Rossi makes a wonderful C.... for $4000. If I could, I would.... It is
cheaper than buying a Powell or Haynes flute, though, by a bunch.
