Thanks Steve and those who responded. I don't doubt that I may spend
more time on a new reed than most, but I don't feel that 5 minutes
should warrant a complete collapse in the reed. I think the majority
of my line of thought behind this questioning is that I haven't had the
same problem with Vandoren/ Grand Concert/ etc. If I had the same
problem, I would agree with you 100%. During a lesson with Mike
Lowenstern, I asked him if he tried the Gonzalez reeds and he found
that for Bass, his total play time was (and I am sure he was
exagerating to make a point) about 3 minutes a reed. He had the same
feeling I had, absolutely overjoyed with the potential, then overly
dismayed with the end result shortly thereafter.

What I will do is pull out the reeds I still have yet to play on and
play them very little over a week's time, then see if they hold up.
Personally I would be suprised, but its worth a shot!
